Funding launched to restore habitats, enhance environment

Carolinian Canada is again offering financial incentives for those who help the environment and restore habitats.

The coalition of environmental leaders is hoping to raise $2 million to deliver measurable, high-impact environmental outcomes across 1,000 hectares throughout the region.

Carolinian Canada Executive Director Michelle Kanter says this area has some of the lowest levels of habitat in the country and protecting the land from harmful climate change is urgently needed.

"Whether you're growing a garden or planting a forest or taking care of a wetland, if you grow a native plant you are creating ecosystems. You're reversing 200 years of habitat loss," said Kanter.

So far, the fund has $1.1 million available.

Kanter said the Carolinian Zone, stretching from Toronto to Windsor, is one of the most biodiverse and threatened regions in the country and desperately needs help.

"You have some of the highest biodiversity, numbers of wild species in Canada, and you have this incredible coastline that's amazing. It just needs a little bit of TLC from everybody who lives here to help take care of it," Kanter noted.

Kanter said there are plenty of opportunities to help our environment and inspire future generations.

"Try out this new way of doing conservation that supports, not just the land, but the people on the land and the multiple uses on the land, including agriculture," she said.

Kanter said the Carolinian Zone is home to over 40 per cent of Canada’s species at risk, and supports millions of people, communities, and industries.
