Free road hockey event coming up in Chatham

Hockey Blast, a free and inclusive road hockey day for kids, is coming back to Chatham.

The event, put on by St. Ursula's Knights of Columbus Council and Community Living Chatham-Kent, will take place on Saturday, April 18, in the parking lot at St. Ursula's Church on Tweedsmuir Avenue.

"It's going to be a shootout challenge, and then with enough players, we'll do some hockey games as well, so it's already looking like that's going to happen for sure," said Jenny McGregor, Manager of Community Relations for Community Living Chatham-Kent. "Lots of prizes to be had, and the event is completely free, and it's for children from 9 to 14."

The event is celebrating its ninth year, after a pause during the pandemic.

McGregor said they're focused on skill-building, friendly play, and getting kids moving, adding that children of all abilities and experience levels are welcome.

"Just a nice community opportunity for kids to get out and do something recreational after the winter," McGregor.

McGregor credits St. Ursula's Church for coming up with the event and hosting it.

"This has been kind of a dream child of St. Ursula's Church, Council 9551. So they're the ones who spearhead it, they do all the organization for, they're incredible, all the setup. They just want to do something nice for kids, and we partner with them on it."

The event is free, but registration is required by emailing Jenny McGregor at jmcgregor@clc-k.ca. To learn more, visit https://www.clc-k.ca/our-impact/events-fundraising/hockeyblast/.
