Four people displaced after fire in Chatham

A multi-unit house fire in Chatham has caused $180,000 in damage and displaced four people.

Chatham-Kent Fire and Rescue (CKFR) reported the fire at the three-unit building at 140 King Street East in Chatham started at a rear apartment on Thursday at approximately 5:30 p.m.

CKFR said crews arrived to find heavy black smoke and visible flames coming from the rear apartment.

"Firefighters quickly secured a hydrant and initiated an aggressive interior attack, bringing the fire under control within minutes," noted CKFR. "Crews completed primary and secondary searches of all units, confirming that no occupants were inside at the time of the incident. Firefighters also accessed the attic to check for extension, ventilated the structure, and completed overhaul operations."

According to fire officials, the fire was contained primarily to the rear apartment, with smoke spreading into the attic.

No injuries are reported.

The cause of the fire is undetermined.
