Wallaceburg man accused of murder finally going to trial

A 70-year-old Wallaceburg man charged with first-degree murder will be going to trial more than 29 months after his arrest.

Marc Lebelle was charged after Chatham-Kent (CK) police found a body in a home on Elgin Street in Wallaceburg at the end of October 2023. The 64-year-old victim from Wallaceburg was found with stab and slash wounds to his neck after police were called for a medical emergency shortly before 2 a.m.

On Tuesday, the court in Chatham heard that Labelle's trial dates will be assigned in Chatham court on March 16, 2026.

Labelle's lengthy preliminary hearing, held at different times over the past several months, has been trying to determine if the case is a homicide or a suicide.

Police previously noted the victim and the accused knew each other and believed the incident to be an isolated one.

Lebelle remains in custody at the Windsor jail.

Publication bans currently prevent any evidence from being made public.
