Extreme cold warning in effect for CK

Both the Municipality of Chatham-Kent and Environment Canada have issued cold warnings.

Strong wind gusts are expected to make it feel as cold as minus 25 or minus 30 degrees Celsius. Temperatures are expected to rise on Tuesday afternoon, but may drop back down Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning.

Extreme cold puts everyone at risk, though there are higher risks for the very young and very old, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter.

During the cold weather, residents are reminded to stay inside if possible and to cover up if going outside is unavoidable. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially in windy conditions.

Symptoms of frostbite include:

• Areas of skin turning red, blue, or grey/white

• Pain, numbness, and stiffness, especially in fingers, toes, ears, and nose, which are most susceptible

If you suspect frostbite:

• Gently warm the affected skin or immerse it in warm water

• Don't rub the area - re-warming may take 30-60 minutes

• Seek emergency medical treatment for a severe, blistering case of frostbite

Hypothermia is also a risk during this time.

Hypothermia can cause shallow breathing, an irregular pulse, and unconsciousness and requires immediate medical attention if it occurs.

Individuals experiencing homelessness are especially vulnerable during the cold and should call the Homeless Response Line at 519-354-6628 for support.
