A Chatham-Kent police officer will be recognized by his peers next week for saving a baby's life.
Sergeant Fraser Leontowicz jumped into action following a 911 call from a new mother in Chatham in September that her three-week-old son was unresponsive and not breathing.
According to Chatham-Kent (CK) police, the mother told the dispatcher that she was in the process of feeding her son when he began to throw up and became unresponsive.
Police said Sergeant Leontowicz arrived on scene and was met by the mother holding her son, who was pale with blue lips.
Police noted Leontowicz immediately started CPR and rescue breaths on the newborn, and the baby regained consciousness.
Police added that the newborn was taken to Chatham-Kent Health Alliance and has made a full recovery.
"Sergeant Leontowicz's actions in an emotional and chaotic situation saved a young baby's life!" said CK Police Services Board Chair Pat Weaver.
Sergeant Leontowicz will be officially recognized for his "outstanding work and dedication to the community" with a Citation at the CK Police Services Board meeting on Wednesday.
