$8.8M Maizex facility expected to boost economic growth in CK

A $8.8 million packaging and processing plant is coming to Blenheim.

Maizex Seeds, which currently has plants in Tilbury and Blenheim, has already broken ground on the new project.

The soybean and corn plant will be replacing an existing plant that was purchased in 2019, when the company partnered with Sollio Agriculture.

“This is an investment to model and significantly increase the capacity and the throughput of that facility,” said Blake Ashton, General Manager of Maizex Seeds.

The new facility is set to have modern cleaning, sizing, and packaging equipment, basing the construction off of its Tilbury plant.

“This new facility will emulate the single-storey flow-through design of our Tilbury facility but with additional automation and capabilities,” said Ashton.

With the new plant, there also comes talk of economic growth for Chatham-Kent (CK).

“Over time as we materialize and recognize that growth, we will add multiple positions within our own organization to support this growth, but also as we increase our seed corn production acres in CK, that will also have peripheral effects of new job creation and new economic opportunity for ourselves, the local farmers and other businesses in the area,” Ashton added.

However, he explained there is no timeline as to when CK will see these job openings.

The facility is set to be constructed by September of 2026.
