Concerns being raised over Dresden Landfill's proximity to schools

The Board of Trustees for the Lambton Kent District School Board (LKDSB) is sending a letter to Ontario's Minister of Education about issues with the Dresden Landfill.

At Tuesday's board meeting, Trustee Angela Richards brought up her concerns about how close the landfill will be to the community's schools.

She specifically had an issue with the site being less than a kilometre from the Lambton Kent Composite School.

"This is a highly dangerous place to have this. This needs to be stopped to protect our children, our bus drivers, teachers, and staff," said Richards.

She believes the Ministry of Education would be hypocritical if it allowed the landfill to move forward. This is because the Ministry recently told the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) it couldn't build a new school at a planned property due to ongoing activity at the GFL Regional Facility.

"All students deserve the same treatment. It doesn't matter where they live," added Richards.

CK News Today reached out to the Ministry of Education for comment, but had not yet heard back at the time of publication.

After Richards brought up her concerns, the board approved having Chair Kelley Robertson send a letter to the Ministry of Education.

Richards herself has sent a letter to Premier Doug Ford explaining her concerns about the landfill. She also shared her displeasure with the Ontario Government looking at the possibility of getting rid of trustees, noting it would be harder to stand up for students and staff with issues like the landfill if she didn't have her position with the LKDSB.
