If you see teenagers out on Halloween night, they're likely collecting non-perishable food, not candy.
Students, staff, and parent volunteers from Ursuline College Chatham (UCC) will fan out across the region on October 31 for the annual 'Lancers Scare Hunger' food drive.
"We have an outstanding team of students from our UCC Cares group leading this important social justice initiative," said UCC Principal Lisa Harnarine.
Grade 12 volunteer Maria Angus, 15, said she joined the UCC Cares group, which organizes the fundraiser, because she knows what poverty looks like from personal experience.
"When I became a student at UCC and heard about the UCC Cares group, I knew I wanted to be a part of it," she explained. "We are working together to help make a difference in the lives of others in our community."
'Lancers Scare Hunger' is the largest food drive of the year for Chatham Outreach for Hunger.
"The UCC community always comes through for us," shared Coral Hoekstra of Chatham Outreach for Hunger. "We rely on this event every year to top up our supplies of non-perishable food items to help get us through the Christmas season."
Participants will cover 60 routes across Chatham from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Other schools in Blenheim, Ridgetown, and Wallaceburg will also be participating in support of local food banks in those communities.
Those who would like to donate, but won't be home on Halloween, can drop off food or monetary donations at the school.
