The Municipality of Chatham-Kent is warning that customers of the Bothwell water distribution system may see slightly discoloured water coming from their water taps in the next few days.
The safety of the water is not affected by this colour issue, said the municipality, but the discolouration will last for a brief period of time and will clear naturally as the system replenishes with new water.
"The cause is naturally occurring colour in the Lake Erie raw water supply related to water temperature fluctuations and lake turnover," reported municipal officials.
The Bothwell water distribution system receives its water from the Water Treatment Plant in West Elgin and it may experience discoloured water in the next few days. However, once the lake returns to normal, the system will be flushed.
The Chatham-Kent Public Utilities Commission (PUC) is keeping the Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit informed and the Public Health Unit will continue to consult with the PUC until the discolouration ends, noted the municipality.
"At this time, there have been no water testing results that indicate there is any health risk from drinking the water," municipal officials noted.
