CK police officers start wearing body cameras this week

The Chatham-Kent Police Service (CKPS) has launched its body-worn camera initiative, saying frontline officers will begin wearing them this week.

Police said the cameras will enhance transparency and public safety, adding the rollout should be done by the end of the year.

"This strategic initiative reinforces the organization’s commitment to accountability, transparency, and community trust and is a key component of CKPS’s 2025 Strategic Plan," said CK police in a news release Monday morning.

Police noted the cameras will be used during interactions with the public, including traffic stops, calls for service, and enforcement activities.

Police officials added that officers will follow strict protocols regarding the activation, deactivation, and storage of recorded footage in accordance with privacy regulations and legal standards.

CKPS said officers will receive "extensive training" on using body worn cameras properly while ensuring they understand the operational guidelines and best practices associated with the technology.

The body-worn cameras were to be rolled out in CK last year.
