More than 2,500 VIA Rail workers hope to improve their pay and benefits, enhance their hybrid pension plan, job security, and work-life balance.
They're represented by Unifor Council 4000 and Local 100, and their bargaining units have opened talks with VIA Rail.
Local 100 is also focused on preventing the contracting out of jobs.
"Our goal in this round of bargaining is to find solutions to critical issues that are impacting the daily lives of our VIA Rail members," said Unifor National President Lana Payne. "Unifor is ready to work with VIA Rail to find common ground that respects the workers' dedication and fosters a productive, respectful work environment."
Payne describes the current round of bargaining as crucial for the stability of the workers and the continued success of VIA Rail.
Council 4000 represents 1,800 workers at VIA's headquarters, in stations across the country, in maintenance centres, and onboard trains.
Local 100 has a membership of 700 who work as diesel engine mechanics, electricians, railcar technicians, and general workers.
