UPDATE: Injuries reported in suspicious Walpole Island fire

A fire Wednesday night at Walpole Island First Nation, that resulted in injuries, is being treated as suspicious.

The Walpole Island Fire Department responded to a fire on Chiefs Road North just before 8 p.m.

Officials said that, while firefighters were battling the blaze, there was a loud explosion, and as a result, one firefighter was sent to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

"[Two] residents were removed from the house before the fire department arrived and transported to hospital," said the fire department in a Facebook post.

Lambton OPP later said an individual who was in the home at the time of the fire was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

However, OPP was not aware of a third person who was reportedly transported to hospital or assessed at the scene.

Provincial police are investigating the blaze alongside Walpole Island First Nation Police and the Ontario Fire Marshal's office. Police were still on scene Thursday morning.

Further details, including a damage estimate, were not immediately available.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Lambton County OPP at 1-888-310-1122. Those who would like to remain anonymous can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or sarnialambtoncrimestoppers.org.
