CK community groups splitting nearly $10k donation from breweries

Four Chatham-Kent breweries are giving nearly $10,000 to multiple groups across the municipality.

For the third year in a row, Red Barn Brewing, Bayside Brewing, Glasstown Brewing, and Sons of Kent Brewing are donating proceeds from some of their ticket sales from BrewFest CK.

Instead of one group receiving the funding, each brewery chose one cause to support, with the funding being equally split.

Red Barn Brewing decided to support the Blenheim Health Foundation.

"Health is so important and we know health care is hard to come by these days," said Denny Vervaet, co-owner of Red Barn Brewing.

He explained the cheque presentation has become a perfect fitting to close the year's BrewFest CK.

"It gives you goosebumps because whether its little for some organizations or large... it's just an initiative we're really proud," Vervaet added.

Sons of Kent Brewing chose to support Santa for Seniors. For the past four years, they've been ensuring seniors living in long-term care got something to open on Christmas, whether its a gift box or cards.

"[The donation] is a really great catalyst for us to keep going for the rest of the season," said Emma Longbottom, co-chair for Santa for Seniors.

Last year, Santa for Seniors handed out around 1,800 gift boxes. Each costs around $20, meaning they'll need approximately $36,000. Longbottom noted they also have some funding left over from last year.

The Erieau Yacht Club is getting funding from Bayside Brewing. Vice Commodore Mark Kempe noted the funding will help them continue their summer camp.

"Unfortunately, we spend more than we have coming in so this will definitely help keep that going," he said.

This past summer saw 35 kids take part, learning to sail and swim.

Kempe adds the funding will also support their Access BOOM Program which gives kids with disabilities the chance to sail.

Lastly, Glasstown Brewing decided to support Community Living Wallaceburg.
