A former military police officer from Chatham has received a very prestigious honour.
Spencer McTavish, 32, was presented with the Vice Chief of the Defence Staff Commendation in front of his co-workers in Blenheim on Friday.
The commendation is awarded to recognize deeds or activities beyond the demand of normal duty.
McTavish was recognized for his exceptional dedication and commitment to protecting sensitive assets following the exodus of Operation Addenda while posted at the Canadian Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan, from July 2019 to September 2020.
Operation Addenda started in 2014 when 16 Canadian Armed Forces personnel were sent to the Canadian embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan to protect the ambassador and staff.
"Despite hostile and adverse conditions, his unwavering resolve and professionalism greatly enhanced the reputation of the Canadian Armed Forces across other government departments and the international community," read the commendation. "Corporal McTavish maintained a positive attitude, served selflessly, and brought great credit to Canada."
McTavish said he was honoured when he found out he was receiving the commendation.
"Caught me off guard, but it's nice to be recognized for your hard work," said McTavish.
McTavish served with the Essex-Kent Scottish Regiment for four years before going into the Canadian Armed Forces full time for eight years.
