The fire that displaced dozens of residents of a Chatham housing complex has been determined to be a case of arson, and police say charges have now been laid.
On Sunday, August 25, fire crews were called to 99 McNaughton Avenue West, where fire damaged several units. Since the fire, many of the residents of the complex have been staying elsewhere, including in hotels.
On Friday, police announced that charges have been laid in connection with the blaze.
"The Chatham-Kent Fire and Rescue Services, Ontario Fire Marshalls Office and Chatham-Kent Police Criminal Investigation Branch have been actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the fire," police said in a news release issued Friday morning. "As a result, a 30-year-old Chatham woman has been arrested and charged with Arson-Disregard for Human Life. She was transported to police headquarters and held pending a bail hearing."
Police later identified the woman as Erin Ott.
Police also announced late Friday that they're looking for 48-year-old Leonard Greason of Chatham on the same charge of Arson-Disregard for Human Life. Police said Greason is also known to frequent London, Ontario.
