It wasn't only human residents who lost their homes on Sunday when a fire ripped through 99 McNaughton Avenue West in Chatham.
Pet and Wildlife Rescue (PAWR) Chatham-Kent said it ended up having to take in a lot of the pets -- mostly cats -- from tenants who were displaced by the fire.
"We spent most of the day shuttling animals and bringing supplies to people who were displaced," said Myriam Armstrong, the operations manager of PAWR.
The increased demand for emergency pet sheltering is also putting an extra strain on PAWR's resources.
"We're running very low on dog food, cat food, cat litter," she added. "People had to leave with pretty much the clothes on their backs. So, they have nothing."
The municipality is working to find temporary shelter for the building tenants, who aren't sure when they'll be able to return home. Out of 120 units, 90 are currently uninhabitable.
Armstrong said that anyone who is willing to help support the PAWR can drop off pet supplies at the shelter, which is open seven days a week.
"If you don't have time to do that, you can always donate online and put a note that says supplies for fire victims and we'll go shopping for you and we'll keep delivering to these people," she stated.
