Teens arrested after alleged assault at Cherryfest

Two local teens are facing assault charges after an alleged incident at a festival in Blenheim.

Chatham-Kent police said their investigation started at around 6 p.m. on July 18 when they were told a group of youths had approached some Cherryfest attendees and started taunting them before assaulting the alleged victims.

Police said the youths who are accused of assault and the victims know each other, adding that the victims reported minor injuries as a result of the incident.

Officers were able to track down two suspects in connection with the case and arrested them on Wednesday.

A 14-year-old Blenheim boy and a 19-year-old Blenheim man were both charged with assault and later released with conditions and a future court date.

Police said they were notified of the alleged bail violation shortly before 6 p.m. Wednesday and arrested the man shortly after 10 p.m. the same day.

Allegedly impaired motorist was also banned from driving

A 44-year-old Chatham man who wasn't supposed to be behind a steering wheel in the first place is in even more trouble after he allegedly ran a red light while he was driving drunk.

Chatham-Kent police said they pulled the driver over shortly after 12 a.m. Thursday after seeing a vehicle travel through a red light on Grand Avenue East in Chatham.

Police said the officer who pulled the vehicle over believed the man was under the influence of alcohol, so he was arrested and taken to police headquarters for breath tests.

Further investigation showed the man was also banned from driving.

The accused was charged with driving while prohibited, impaired driving, and driving with a blood alcohol concentration over the legal limit.

He was later released with conditions and a future court date. His vehicle was towed and impounded.
