Brian Mulroney, former prime minister, dies at 84

Former prime minister Brian Mulroney has died at the age of 84.

The former conservative leader died peacefully and surrounded by family, according to a social media post late Thursday.

“On behalf of my mother and our family, it is with great sadness we announce the passing of my father, The Right Honourable Brian Mulroney, Canada’s 18th Prime Minister. He died peacefully, surrounded by family,” his daughter Caroline Mulroney wrote.

Born in Baie-Comeau, Quebec, Mulroney studied politics and law before entering politics.

He served as the 18th prime minister of Canada from 1984 to 1993.

"Brian Mulroney loved Canada," said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in a social media post. "I’m devastated to learn of his passing. He never stopped working for Canadians, and he always sought to make this country an even better place to call home. I’ll never forget the insights he shared with me over the years – he was generous, tireless, and incredibly passionate."

Arrangement details are expected to be shared once they become available.
