The trial of a London man accused of deliberately killing four members of a Muslim family with his pickup truck in London two years ago featured audio from a 911 call and a video showing Nathaniel Veltman's arrest on June 6, 2021.
The arrest exhibit video captured then 20-year-old Veltman dropping to his knees, putting his hands behind his head, and waiting for police after the 911 call by cab driver Azzeddin Jahanghiri was made, allegedly at Veltman's request, at 8:45 p.m.
Veltman then laid on his stomach, was handcuffed, and escorted off by police 13 minutes later at 8:58 p.m.
The video showed a total of seven police cruisers responded to the 911 call and the pickup truck was cordoned off with police tape.
The jury also heard more testimony from witnesses on Tuesday in Windsor Superior Court.
Jahanghiri testified Veltman pulled up next to his cab at Cherryhill Village Mall wearing an army helmet and told him to call police, saying he just killed someone. The cabbie claimed Veltman was smiling and showed no signs of distress.
"He was very calm actually, not stressed," Jahanghiri told the court.
The driver told the court Veltman talked to emergency dispatch through the cab driver's speaker phone while still inside his truck with the window down, saying he hit the victims on purpose.
The cab driver also testified that Veltman asked him to make a video of the arrest, but the driver said he ignored him.
He said that Veltman told dispatch to "get the [expletive] over here would you" after a question from the emergency communications worker on the phone.
The taxi driver told the courtroom he saw smoke coming from under the black pickup's hood and the front end was badly damaged with bloody tissue attached to it.
The rest of London police video analyst Viktor Poc's testimony was pushed until Wednesday to accommodate out of town witnesses on Tuesday. Tuesday's final witness was also pushed to Wednesday.
Earlier on Tuesday, an agreed statement of facts stated that the deceased mother's and grandmother's clothing was wedged in Veltman's truck. The mother's, father's, and grandmother's DNA was also found on the hood and push bar on the truck.
London police also found two knives and an air soft pistol in the truck.
The trial continues on Wednesday. There are 15 of the 20 witnesses expected to be called still to testify.
Veltman pleaded not guilty to four counts of first degree murder and one count of attempted murder.
Salman Afzaal, 46, his wife Madiha Salman, 44, their 15-year-old daughter Yumna Afzaal, and Salman's 74-year-old mother Talat Afzaal were killed while taking a walk at Hyde Park and South Carriage Roads. A now 11-year-old boy is the only survivor after a pickup truck hopped the curb and hit the family before driving off.
