Chatham-Kent councillor seeks to ban flag raisings on municipal property

A councillor in Chatham-Kent wants to put an end to flag raisings at the civic centre in Chatham.

Rhonda Jubenville entered a notice of motion during Monday night's council meeting that would potentially see only government flags being flown on municipal property.

"There was one organization that did indeed request to have their flag flown and raised," said Jubenville. "The request wasn't denied but it was unanswered. I equate an unanswered as a no."

Jubenville told CK News Today that the organization is a group that "educates, clarifies a lot of misinformation, helps people in need, and respects the sanctity of life."

CK News Today reached out to community groups that matched the description and received confirmation on Wednesday that Life in Motion Chatham-Kent requested a flag raising at the Civic Centre but never received a response from the Mayor's office.

A spokesperson for the organization said it has yet to get a response to its request and that the group did not have any further comments.

Instead of having flags that promote community groups and organizations, Jubenville said she wants to only have the Canadian, Ontario, and Chatham-Kent flags outside the Civic Centre and service centres.

"I think we need to say yes to all or no to all," said Jubenville. "We're in a time right now where we cannot discriminate against any group. To decline one organization because perhaps some people do not subscribe to the agenda or ideology of that organization, is not right."

CK News Today has asked the Mayor's office for comment but has not received a response to the request.

"It seems that every group has a flag and everybody wants their flag flown," said Jubenville. "Maybe, just maybe, we need to go back to the basics and fly our government flags."

Jubenville's motion will be up for debate at the April 24 council meeting.
