Communities rally for both drivers involved in tragic collision

Thoughts, prayers, and donations are pouring in for two drivers involved in a fatal collision in Lakeshore this week.

First responders were called to County Road 42, west of Patillo Road, at around 9:20 p.m. Tuesday after a tractor-trailer and SUV collided.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) reported that the 20-year-old driver of the SUV died at the scene, while the truck driver was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

On Wednesday, the young driver who died was identified as Sylvain Lessard.

Lessard, called Syl by friends, family, and teammates, was a hockey player who had recently been traded to the Lakeshore Canadiens by the Wheatley Omstead Sharks in the PJHL. The Windsor native also played for the Leamington Flyers.

According to a GoFundMe page set up by Lessard's sister, the 20-year-old was on his way home from hockey practice when he was killed in the crash.

The GoFundMe was set up to help Lessard's family with funeral costs and exceeded its $20,000 goal within 24 hours of it being made public.

On the other side of the collision was 46-year-old truck driver Muhammad Asif Khan.

A GoFundMe set up on behalf of his family reported that Khan is in a coma and is still in critical condition in the hospital following the collision.

The GoFundMe says Khan, a husband and father of four, was the sole earner for the family, with no other means of support. The fundraiser was organized to help the family pay for expenses such as their mortgage, car payments, taxes, and groceries while Khan's future remains uncertain.

In less than a day, the GoFundMe campaign for Khan's family was almost halfway to its $50,000 goal.
