Saturday is CHiRP Day in Chatham-Kent, and firefighters will educate residents about fire safety in their homes.
Chatham-Kent Fire Chief Chris Case says firefighters from all 19 fire stations will knock on doors and visit homes to discuss fire safety and check alarms.
‘We have seen the tragedy of someone losing their life in a house fire in the past few weeks and we will do whatever we can to prevent this happening again,” said Case. “We know a residence is significantly safer after a visit from our firefighters and we would rather come to your home bringing a home safety check than a hose-line.”
The CHiRP program provides residents with fire safety education in the home while checking, testing, and replacing smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
Last year, nearly 1,000 homes were fitted with smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, according to Case.
"When these things happen, you don't have a lot of time," said Case. "Every second counts. You've got to get out, and you've got to get out quickly."
Firefighters will be chatting about fire safety and escape planning, as well as answering any questions you may have.
The entire process takes less than 10-15 minutes and then you and your family will be protected from fire and carbon monoxide.
Residents can request a CHiRP home safety check by visiting ckfire.ca or calling 519-360-1998.
Keep an eye out for fire trucks on your street on October 21 for CHiRP Day in CK.
