Unleashing every child's bike-riding abilities

Riding a bike can be difficult, but with a disability, it can be even more challenging.

In order to meet that challenge, the iCan Bike camp program has returned to Chatham-Kent for the first time in five years.

The Children's Treatment Centre of Chatham-Kent (CTC-CK) is hosting the iCan Bike program this week to teach children over the age of eight with a disability how to ride a conventional two-wheel bicycle and become lifelong independent riders.

The U.S. charitable organization iCan Shine offers its iCan Bike camp programs across North America to help children and adults with disabilities, impairments, or barriers learn how to ride a two-wheeled bicycle, thus achieving a new level of independence and improving their quality of life.

The program uses custom-designed adapted bike equipment, with each session lasting for 75 minutes.

Alison Munro, a Recreational Therapist at the CTC-CK, told CK News Today parent feedback was a significant influence on iCan Bike's return.

"This is a goal for some parents as it can be a struggle for their children to ride independently as a whole," said Munro. "We have upwards of 60 volunteers, anywhere from our staff, community members, teachers, and therapists to help assist in this program."

Alli Shaw, a Recreation Therapist with the CTC-CK, says the program has over 80% success rate year after year.

"I hope to offer this program in the years to come as this is a fantastic program for children to learn from," said Shaw. "Donations and grants are helpful, but assistance from the community and government will help us offer these large-scale programs more often."

The program was made possible in Chatham-Kent through a grant funded by the Canadian Parks and Recreation Association and the Canadian government.

Children could ride their two-wheel bikes independently or with support by the last day. All riders were noticeably more determined, confident, and excited to continue riding a two-wheel bike.

Volunteers told CK News Today they adored watching the riders' determination and progression throughout the program, adding that the children's excitement is always worth watching.

The iCan Shine Program also hosts iCan Swim and iCan Dance throughout the year.
