Chatham's first recovery home for addiction almost ready to host residents

A new home for men who want to recover from drug addiction is about to open in Chatham.

Program Coordinator at Journeys Recovery Home Matthew Kelly told CK News Today the home should be open in mid-June at 20 Joseph Street in Chatham and is for men only, 18-years-old and older, after they go through detoxification.

Kelly, who had a drug habit for more than 20 years but is recovering, said the recovery home can hold six or seven men currently, but is seeking a zoning change to use all 16 beds at the home.

Kelly said he lived that life, was homeless, and wanted to give back to his community when he got sober because there's a need for a recovery home in Chatham.

"I just wanted to give back to the community that I've been taking away from and be an 'add to' instead of a 'minus,'" said Kelly.

Kelly said the program is three months and the new recovery home serves as another option because the lack of beds and lengthy waiting lists are a big problem in Chatham-Kent.

"We do run a three month core program, but we also act as a transition house that people are going to and coming from," he added.

Kelly said the recovery home provides a safe, sober living environment as the residents wait for or return from programs.

He said work is currently underway to open the home on time, adding the program is not-for-profit and faith-based, but everyone is welcome regardless of religion.

Kelly added there was some negative feedback from the neighbours initially, but they're starting to come around after he reassured them the residents are not active users anymore and won't cause problems.

He said his biggest advice is "never quit quitting" and "if you're down and out, reach out."

Kelly said if he can do it, so can others.
