The next step to open a dog park in Blenheim is underway.
The Municipality of Chatham-Kent is looking for committee members to potentially develop and operate the off-leash dog park near Little Street South and Snow Avenue in Blenheim that allows dogs to run free.
Councillors identified the lands two years ago.
Each Chatham-Kent dog park is developed and managed by a group of 10-15 volunteers, over the age of 18, from that community.
They are responsible for fundraising to build the park, take care of any upgrades. manage clean-up and maintenance at the proposed site, and report any concerns or violations of rules to the municipality.
A member of the committee is appointed Chair.
"Time commitment for members of the committee can vary depending on the operation of the park. Current committees arrange to meet several times per year," said the municipality in a statement.
Chatham-Kent has two designated off-leash dog parks: Happy Tails Off-Leash Dog Park in Wallaceburg and John Waddell Dog Park in Chatham with another location proposed in Dresden that still needs Council designation and development.
Members of the public can apply at www.letstalkchatham-kent.ca before 4:30 p.m. on Friday, May 26, 2023.
Criteria for the dog park previously approved by council includes that the park is one to five acres in size, is fully accessible, is able to be maintained all year-round, and is a minimum of 50 metres from the nearest residential building or structure.
