Chatham-Kent butcher hosting fundraiser for charity close to the heart

A family-owned butcher shop based out of Chatham-Kent is looking to give back to a national charity close to its heart.

Louis Roesch, owner of Roesch Meats and More in Kent Bridge, suffered from a heart attack a year ago on Thanksgiving. Now, his family and he are giving back to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.

"It's kind of the way it works," said Roesch. "It doesn't matter who you are or where you come from, if your heart stops working, it stops."

But the family's connection to heart and stroke research doesn't stop there. Roesch's son-in-law, Dr. Glen Pyle, is a molecular cardiology researcher at the University of Guelph currently exploring the link between menopause and heart disease.

"He and his team are accelerating advances to drive new knowledge and innovation in women's heart and brain health," said Roesch.

According to research, more than half of women who experience a heart attack have their symptoms go unrecognized. They are less likely than men to receive the treatments and medications they need.

"By donating, you’re funding the next big breakthrough in women's heart and brain research," read the fundraiser website.

The business will be hosting its 28th annual barbecue fundraiser at Roesch Meats and More, located at 10910 Northwood Line at Mull Road in Kent Bridge, on April 1 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

"It's our customer appreciation weekend," said Roesch. "We have been doing this ever since we started but lost the past couple of years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so this is the first year we're hosting it post-pandemic restrictions."

All proceeds from the barbecue will go toward fundraising efforts, according to Roesch. He said residents can also make cash donations and receive a receipt for their contribution.

"We're looking forward to some nice weather," said Roesch. "It will go on rain or shine."
