North Buxton celebrates 99th Homecoming

North Buxton saw an influx of visitors over the Labour Day weekend, as the community celebrated its annual Homecoming.

After two years of virtual or scaled-back versions of the event, the homecoming celebration returned to normal for its 99th annual edition.

Shannon Prince, event organizer and curator for the Buxton Museum, said she was pleased with this year's turnout.

"You wouldn't have thought we lost a bit," Prince said. "It was great to see the people reconnect and reunite. The families that haven't seen each other for several years, the tears flowing, the hugs. It was just wonderful."

The event celebrates the Underground Railroad and how it helped American slaves to freedom in Canada. It featured a lot of familiar programs seen in past years and new ones, including a musically-driven church service on Sunday.

"It was very inspirational," Prince said. "It left people feeling with a sense of home and community. It was a combination of music and history that brought everyone together."

The community will soon be focusing on the event next year.

Looking forward to the 100th homecoming celebration next year, Prince said organizers have several ideas floating around for the big celebration.

"We would like to do a bigger Labour Day booklet, almost like a yearbook, and pay homage to different people along the way," Prince said. "Because everything started under a pear tree that is still standing today, we would like to do something under the pear tree as well."
