Moving scam hits CK

Chatham-Kent police are warning the public about another scam making its rounds.

This time, local police are reporting that a moving scam is catching unsuspecting victims off guard across the municipality.

Police said on May 13, 2022 and June 24, 2022, police received reports of individuals entering into a contract with a moving company based out of Toronto and agreeing on a cost for the move. However, after the move begins, the victims receive a request from the company for more money to complete the move or their belongings would not be delivered.

Police said these two incidents are related to ongoing investigations by the Toronto Police Service and police in Chatham-Kent are collaborating with their counterparts in Toronto to help in their investigations.

"The Chatham-Kent Police Service would like to caution the public. These moving companies appear professional and normal with reasonable rates and may offer weeks of free storage. The move will begin as expected, but hours later, victims receive a phone call saying they owe more money than initially agreed upon or their property will not be delivered. It is highly recommended you research the moving company before you sign any agreement," wrote police in a statement issued on Monday.

The Toronto Police Service has released the following list of moving company names that are suspected of fraudulent activity:

  • 12282569 Canada Inc.

  • O’Canada Movers

  • Roadway Moving and Storage Inc.

  • SafeBound Moving and Storage Inc.

  • Canadian Principal Movers

  • All You Can Move

  • Right on Track Moving

  • New Vision Moving

  • Greenway Moving

If you believe you have been a victim of this scam, please contact the Chatham-Kent police non-emergency number at 519-352-1234.
