The Terry Fox Run in Chatham is looking for a new organizer.
Terry Fox Run Ontario Community Events Coordinator Kim Smith said a new volunteer is needed because current run organizer Pat McMahon wants to step down from the lead role and can't organize the run this year.
"Pat McMahon is a wonderful donor, fundraiser, and organizer, but wishes to step down from the lead role as he cannot organize this year. I am sure Pat will be available to advise and help guide the new person(s) but we need people first," said Smith.
Smith said the Chatham Terry Fox Run has contributed almost $400,000 to cancer research since 1981.
"Our greatest strength is the extraordinary team of Terry Fox volunteers that span from coast to coast, a human chain linked by a common purpose – to make a positive difference in the fight against cancer. They also share many of the attributes Canadians hold most dear: they are dedicated and driven, helpful and humble and, above all, they are caring and compassionate," she said.
Anyone interested in the volunteer position can contact Smith directly at 416-924-8252 extension: 227 or 888-836-9786 or Kim.Smith@terryfox.org to inquire about how they can help by leading a committee of volunteers to put the event together.
The 42nd annual Terry Fox Run will be held September 18, 2022.
Fox dipped his artificial leg in the Atlantic Ocean on April 12, 1980, but was stopped by cancer returning in his lungs before reaching the Pacific Ocean. He was forced to stop his Marathon of Hope on September 1, 1980 after having run 5,373 kilometres. He died on June 28, 1981 at the age of 22.
The Terry Fox Run has boosted cancer research in Canada by raising more than $850 million nation-wide since 1980.
