'Absolutely devastated': Loads of Love Chatham-Kent providing aid to Ukraine

Residents who want to help Ukrainians displaced and negatively impacted by Russia's invasion can do so, right here in Chatham-Kent.

Loads of Love Humanitarian Aid and Mission Society is accepting monetary donations to help Ukraine.

"We are working in Ukraine," said Loads of Love Overseas Director Ed Dickson. "We have 40 full-time staff in Ukraine distributing aid to people."

Dickson lives in Kyiv, Ukraine but his family has been in Chatham-Kent since August.

"We're here but our hearts are in Ukraine," said Dickson. "We are absolutely devasted. We have family and friends who are hiding in basements. We are in contact with them, we can see the fear in them."

Dickson said the donations will go towards providing aid to the people of Ukraine. Generally, containers are shipped out from Chatham but Dickson said because of the invasion, they cannot be shipped out.

"The banks haven't shut down, so we can distribute funds to all of our workers, churches and all of the other people who are reaching out," said Dickson. "They're purchasing food, mostly, as well as medicine and supplies to help families in desperate need."

Dickson said residents can make donations through the society's website. Donations can be made by e-transfer, through mail-in, or online through CanadaHelps.

"The best way to help, is to help with finances," said Dickson. "They are desperately needed. Thankfully, the banks and phone lines are still open, which allows us to do this. We hope those channels stay open."
