Point Edward has approved a COVID-19 vaccination policy for its five member council.
Village council members and political appointees are being asked to provide proof of vaccination by Friday October 1, 2021 to attend in-person meetings or enter municipal facilities.
The village said the mandated policy, passed on Tuesday, is an effort to maintain a healthy and safe workplace, reduce the risks of transmission and serious illness associated with the virus and its variants and prevent workplace outbreaks.
CAO Jim Burns said members who don't provide proof of vaccination, will have to be tested for the virus.
"Basically the same policy that applies to staff just with a few changes," said Burns. "The staff policy is that you need to be tested twice a week, this policy we changed it to if you're not vaccinated and you need to be in a building you need to be tested within 72 hours prior to entering the building.
Earlier this month Sarnia City Council adopted a policy stating all councilors be fully vaccinated by October 31 to attend in-person meetings.
Lambton County Council will discuss a similar motion at it's next meeting on October 6.
