Canada Day traditions in Windsor-Essex are going to be a lot different this year with social distancing measures still in place.
As those measures continue, organizers of one of Windsor's largest events have decided to pull the plug. There will not be a Summer Fest at the Festival Plaza this June.
The Windsor Parade Corporation, which organizes the multi-day celebration each year, has cancelled it.
Instead, the corporation said it is working with Heritage Canada on a new event on July 1 that families can enjoy while staying safe.
"As part of July 1 celebrations, a virtual presentation will be available showcasing both local and regional talent and memorable moments from previous years," said a release from the corporation Wednesday night. "The Windsor Parade Corporation has invited Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus to Windsor and Essex County on Canada Day to assist with this unique celebration."
The corporation said it would release more information in the coming weeks.
Meanwhile, Lakeshore has also cancelled its 2020 Canada Day festival in Woodslee.
"Keeping our residents safe is our top priority," said Kirk Walstedt, a Lakeshore councillor and member of the organizing committee.
Fellow Lakeshore councillor Linda McKinlay, who is also on the organizing committee, said, "This is a difficult time for everyone. We apologize for any disappointment. However, we cannot risk spreading this virus."
The festival is expected to go ahead next year.
