The City of Windsor has teamed up with community partners to create an option for the city's vulnerable.
Windsor Water World is the site of a new day program, operated by the city in cooperation with the Canadian Mental Health Association, the CommUnity Partnership, and the Family Services Windsor-Essex street outreach team.
With social-distancing guidelines in place during the COVID-19 pandemic, the city's homeless are finding it challenging to find places to go during the day while following the guidelines.
"With places like libraries and community centres closed due to COVID-19, we know our homeless residents are having trouble finding a safe place to go during the day while adhering to directives for social distancing," said Jelena Payne, the city's community development and health services coordinator. "By partnering with some great agencies, we’re able to provide a safe, clean location and personal supports to help everyone get through this pandemic."
Water World had served as the city's premier water park until the Windsor International Aquatic and Training Centre, with Adventure Bay water park, opened. The building is still used for community events.
The day program will be offered from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily at the complex on Wyandotte Street East at Glengarry Avenue. Activities and light refreshments will be offered with social distancing in effect.
Details are available on the city's official website or by calling 311.
