Access to one of the area's natural treasures will be limited this week.
Parks Canada has closed the main road into Point Pelee National Park through Thursday, to vehicles south of the Marsh Boardwalk day-use area. The closure is to allow crews to facilitate work as part of a larger project.
The road, however, will be open from the park's north entrance to the Marsh Boardwalk. Access to the multi-use trails for pedestrians and cyclists will also be maintained.
Repaving the seven-kilometre road is only part of the federally-funded infrastructure project designed to improve access through the park. Phone and hydro lines are being moved underground to minimize the impact of utility corridors through the park's forest and coastal savannah habitat. Sewage treatment protecting the park's most vulnerable wetland ecosystems is also taking place.
"This infrastructure improvement work began in late January 2020, and the full project is expected to be completed by late fall of this year," said Sarah Simpson, southwestern Ontario spokesperson for Parks Canada. "Throughout the construction period, visitors may experience occasional delays, lane closures, and conditions consistent with road re-surfacing. Parks Canada appreciates the patience and understanding of our visitors as we complete this important work."
