Man Charged with Break and Enter

A 24-year-old Chatham man has been charged with break and enter.

Police said a concerned citizen called police Monday night to report a man damaging a home in Chatham. When officers arrived they saw a man leaving the home with several frames. Investigators said the man smashed four windows of the home of a family member who was not home, tore the mailbox off the home, damaged a metal railing, and broke a family photo inside the home.

The suspect is also charged with mischief, theft, and being in possession of property obtained by a crime.

Foot Chase Leads to Drug Charges

Drug charges have been laid against a Chatham man after a brief foot chase.

Police said officers found a man in the area of King Street and William Street in Chatham around 2 a.m. on Tuesday who was wanted for fraud-related offences. He ran away and was seen throwing something towards a sewer grate. The man was arrested a short distance away on an outstanding warrant.

Officers returned to the sewer area and recovered five hydromorph contin pills on top of the grate.

The 24-year-old man of no fixed address was charged with drug possession and breach of probation for being in possession of illegal drugs.

Executed Warrants

Three wanted men have been rounded up by police and returned to their hometowns to face the music.

Officers responded to a report of a suspicious man near a business on St. Clair Street in Chatham on Monday morning and found a man who was wanted by London police. The 49-year-old man was arrested and turned over to officers from London.

Then on Monday night, a 20-year-old man wanted for domestic-related offences and failing to attend court was arrested in London and returned to Chatham-Kent.

And just before 4 a.m. Tuesday, a 25-year-old man wanted for failing to comply with his release conditions was arrested by Leamington OPP and was transported back to Chatham-Kent.

Chatham Assault

Chatham-Kent police are looking for a woman accused of beating up another female in downtown Chatham.

Police said the victim was walking on King Street West in Chatham on February 8 when she was approached by an unknown female accompanied by two men. Investigators said the female suspect allegedly knocked the victim to the ground with punches during the assault. The victim suffered a concussion and required stitches to treat a wound to her mouth.

The suspect is described as a white woman in her 20s with blonde hair.

Traffic Blitz Results

A traffic blitz across Chatham-Kent last week caught 61 speeding drivers and many others doing what they shouldn't be doing on the road.

Officers were looking for drivers using their cell phones, not wearing their seat belts, driving aggressively, and any other offences that would cause a driver to be distracted.

Police also charged 27 drivers with document-related offences, 15 for using their cell phones while driving, 11 for not wearing their seat belt, 7 with other offences contrary to the rules of the road, and another 7 with driving with expired validation stickers. One person was charged with not wearing a helmet on a powered bicycle.

Chatham-Kent police added more enforcement initiatives will continue throughout the year in an effort to keep all road users in our community safe.

Theft of Boat Motor in Tilbury

Chatham-Kent police are looking for whoever stole a boat motor from an unlocked shed in Tilbury.

Police said it happened on Canal Street sometime between Saturday at 5 p.m. and Sunday at 6 a.m. Investigators said someone stole a 9.9 HP Mercury outboard boat motor and various tools worth an estimated $3,600.

"Criminals look for easy opportunities, so please secure your garage or shed, as you would your home," said Constable Renee Cowell, Public Information Officer with Chatham-Kent police in a news release issued on Tuesday morning. "The Chatham-Kent Police also encourages everyone to be vigilant. Keen observations and a quick call to police can help reduce crime in your neighbourhood.
