Man charged after damaging prison cell
A Chatham man is facing several charges after he caused some trouble following his arrest.
It started Tuesday night after officers responded to a call about a suspicious man in a parking lot on St. Clair Street in Chatham.
Once police located the man, they learned that he had allegedly stolen a flashlight and batteries from Home Depot. He was arrested and charged with theft under $5,000 and being in possession of property obtained by a crime under $5,000.
Things went from bad to worse after the man allegedly damaged his cell mattress while in police custody. As a result, he has also been charged with mischief under $5,000 and is being held in custody awaiting a bail hearing.
Charges pending after domestic incident
On Tuesday morning, a man went to his ex-girlfriend's house in Wallaceburg and allegedly kicked her door as an attempt to get inside. He was removed from the area by police and told not to return.
However, that didn't stop the man. Around 3:30 that same afternoon, he returned to the house and walked right in.
The 47-year-old has been charged with mischief under $5,000 and being unlawfully in a dwelling house. He remains in custody pending a bail hearing.
Weekend break and enter in Chatham
Police are looking for the person or people who broke into a Chatham property over the weekend.
It happened at a fenced compound on Riverview Drive. The forced entry into the property caused around $100 in damage. Various gas-related items were stolen including 30 feet of black hose, six small valves, and several pipe fittings valued around $5,000.

Woman charged after failing to comply
A woman has been nabbed by police after failing to comply with her release conditions.
The woman was released from custody on March 4, 2019 with several conditions. One of the conditions was that she has to attend police headquarters every Thursday to sign in.
Since her release, the 25-year-old Chatham woman has only signed in twice. Officers were able to locate her Tuesday afternoon. She was arrested and charged with failing to comply. She was released and given a future court date.
Breach of conditions leads to charges
A man from Chatham is in trouble with the law after communicating with a woman he wasn't supposed to.
It stems from his February 2019 release, in which he had several conditions including not communicating with a specific Chatham woman.
Earlier this week, police learned that the man had been in contact with the woman, sending her text messages and emails.
Tuesday morning, the 53-year-old was taken into custody and charged with two counts of failing to comply. He was transported to the courthouse pending a bail hearing where he was released with a future court date.
