A property in Chatham seized under the Civil Remedies Act is officially sold, after a final appeal was denied.
The Chatham-Kent Police Service says from 2002-2007, police visited 51 Taylor Ave. more than 300 times, making nearly 50 arrests and laying more than 115 charges.
"Civil remedies was kind of groundbreaking back then and it is a case that sets precedent in the province today," says Detective Sergeant Keith Myers. "The occupants of that building, the business didn't stop, we only interrupted their business. So we took a different approach: let's take the building."
The application for seizure started in August 2007 and was approved in court in 2012.
The Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada both rejected appeals of the seizure and the property was sold in May.
The proceeds of the sale are kept by the province.
