Tecumseh man among those injured at CFB Wainwright

A Windsor-Essex man is among those critically injured in a fire at a Canadian Forces base this past weekend.

Daniel Thrasher, who grew up in Tecumseh, is in critical condition at an Edmonton hospital as the result of injuries suffered when a fire swept through CFB Wainwright in Alberta. Four CFB members were killed, and 39 were injured, 19 of them critically.

Thrasher attended L'Essor Catholic Secondary School, which acknowledged the injury on its Facebook page.

"Daniel is much more than a former student of our school. Daniel has been giving his time to our football teams for years," read the social media post, in French. "He is a deeply committed man to his community, who has given so much to others and to the young people who have had the chance to cross his path. Today, it is our turn to be there for him."

The Town of Tecumseh has confirmed that Thrasher had previously worked in its parks department. Flags outside Tecumseh Town Hall, and Fire Stations 1 and 2, have been lowered to half-staff in support of Thrasher and his family.

A GoFundMe page has been set up for Thrasher's recovery, and for family members to cover expenses related to travel to Edmonton. As of 6 p.m. on Wednesday, it had raised over $79,000 of a $100,000 goal.
