OPP arrest five for impaired driving in eight hours

It might be a record for even Essex County Ontario Provincial Police.

The OPP arrested five drivers for driving impaired in just eight hours.

Drivers from Leamington and Windsor were charged, starting with a traffic complaint on Ivan Street in Leamington.

The OPP arrested a 40-year-old Leamington man just before 3 p.m. on Tuesday.

Then, police investigated a traffic violation on Hwy. 401 near the E.C. Row around 7:30 p.m. There, they arrested a 38-year-old Windsor man, who, in addition to impaired driving charges, also faces a count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

The next call came just after 9 p.m. when police received a tip about a suspicious person on Mersea Road 5 near Hwy. 77 in Leamington. Officers said that the driver allegedly had an open bottle of liquor in the vehicle with them.

A 50-year-old Leamington man was placed in cuffs and charged.

Just 90 minutes later, a 22-year-old Leamington man was arrested and charged for driving impaired and having drugs in the vehicle. The driver is a novice and will appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Windsor on December 1.

Just 11 minutes after that call, the OPP received another call about a traffic violation on Hwy. 3 near Malden Road in Tecumseh, where they found a child in the vehicle who wasn't properly secured.

A 38-year-old woman is now charged with driving with a child passenger who is not properly secured, operation of a motor vehicle while impaired, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, failure to comply with a release order, driving without a license, and driving with an open bottle of liquor in the vehicle.

If you have an urgent traffic complaint or suspect someone else is impaired behind the wheel, call 911. For a non-emergency traffic complaint, call 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
