LaSalle Town Council believes that one thing is missing from the successful opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge (GHIB).
Mayor Crystal Meloche introduced a motion at Tuesday night's council meeting, urging a review of a plan to place the town's name on the signage leading bridge users into the county.
The motion was passed unanimously.
Speaking on her motion, Meloche pointed out a glaring omission on one sign that guides commuters from the span to adjacent municipalities.
"Current directional signage encountered by motorists entering Canada from the Gordie Howe International Bridge identifies Windsor and Amherstburg, but does not identify the Town of LaSalle," said Meloche.
Meloche added that the current signs do not show that the bridge provides direct access to the town, which could affect local tourism.
"LaSalle's omission from the important gateway signage represents a missed opportunity for wayfinding, tourism, and economic development, particularly as the Town continues to develop its waterfront district and attract visitors and investment to our community," said Meloche.
The motion authorized the Town to contact the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO), along with any provincial or federal stakeholders, to review the signage and update it to include LaSalle.
The GHIB, which opened this summer, also allows for direct commercial access to the Herb Gray Parkway and Highway 401.
