The initiative that allows Windsor police to work with nurses and social workers has been recognized by a local group.
The Windsor-Essex Innovate Council held an event on Monday afternoon at Windsor police headquarters to recognize the Nurse Police Team (NPT) for its efforts to improve community safety and health.
"The Nurse Police Team is a perfect example of public sector innovation," read a release from the Innovate Council. "By blending police authority and safety awareness with immediate clinical expertise, they make better-informed decisions right at the point of contact. They are proof that cross-sector collaboration can solve some of our most difficult social challenges."
The NPT is a partnership with Windsor Regional Hospital. It was first established as a pilot project in January 2023 and has since expanded.
Police officers are paired with WRH emergency department nurses to respond to substance-related calls. The objective is to allow these cases to be handled in the field, rather than contributing to wait times in the emergency room.
"The Windsor-Essex Innovate Council applauds the Windsor Police Service and Windsor Regional Hospital for moving away from the old way of doing things," read the release. "Rather than asking officers to solve healthcare problems alone, or forcing the hospital to wait until a patient arrives in handcuffs, the NPT delivers compassionate, immediate, and effective care right where it is needed most."
The Innovate Council supports programs and initiatives that increase the quality of life in the region. Its goal is to recognize 25 projects by the end of 2027.
