A 35-year-old man has been charged after Windsor police say an elderly man was scammed.
The Financial Crimes Unit started an investigation after getting a complaint on Wednesday afternoon. Police learned that an 81-year-old man had gotten numerous phone calls from people claiming that the victim's grandchild had been arrested and urgently needed bail money.
The suspects allegedly told the victim a fictitious story about the grandchild causing a crash that struck a pregnant woman, who lost the baby as a result. About ten calls from private numbers claiming to be lawyers or police attempting to confirm the story were received.
Later that day, the suspect went to the victim's house and received an envelope containing $5,000 in cash.
Members of the Problem-Oriented Policing (POP) Unit arrested the suspect on Monday on Longfellow Avenue near Arcadia Street.
