Redeveloped long-term care home coming to Amherstburg

The provincial government has announced a new investment in Windsor-Essex's long-term care options.

Ontario Long-Term Care Minister Natalia Kusendova-Bashta was in Amherstburg on Wednesday to unveil a redeveloped Chateau Park Long-Term Care Home on Fryer Street.

"We are building for the future to create good-paying jobs and support stronger, more resilient communities," said Kusendova-Bashta. "Today marks a significant milestone for Amherstburg. Once construction is complete, 160 residents will have a new home where they can receive the care they need, when they need it."

The new facility will replace a 59-bed long-term care home in Windsor. The project is expected to create 370 jobs. About 240 will be permanent jobs at the facility, including the 90 currently working at the Windsor home.

Positions to be filled at the new home include nursing, personal support work, dietary aides, program aides, and administration.

Amherstburg Mayor Michael Prue said work has already begun on the development.

"Every day we are witnessing this new building rise from the ground," said Prue. "It will be a symbol of our civic pride as we move forward to make Amherstburg a stronger and more vibrant town."

The new Chateau Park home in Amherstburg will feature five resident home areas, each with living quarters, lounges, dining rooms, and activity areas accommodating up to 32 residents apiece. Other amenities will include therapy rooms, a beauty salon, a worship room, activity rooms with natural sunlight, and multiple courtyards.

The project is supported by a $35-million investment through the Building Ontario Fund, along with a top-up in construction subsidies.
