Downtown mission celebrates record Coldest Night fundraiser

Windsor-Essex residents came out in full force to help the vulnerable this past weekend.

Over 400 registered participants took to the streets on Saturday night for Windsor's version of the Coldest Night of the Year fundraiser, which raises money for the Downtown Mission.

The Mission announced on Wednesday that it surpassed its goal of $125,000 and broke a record. The walk raised $132,740.

"Windsor showed up in an incredible way," said Mission Manager of Development and Community Engagement Kevin Blondin. "It's great to show our guests of the Mission that they are not alone and our community does care about each and every one of them."

The fundraiser also attracted 17 sponsors and 46 teams. There were 75 volunteers also working the event.

Windsor also placed well among places across Canada. Out of 222 locations nationwide, Windsor was ranked 31st.

The Windsor walk also exceeded the national average for fundraising total, participants, teams, donor engagement, and sponsors.

Four Windsor city councillors stopped by, along with Windsor West MP Harb Gill. Local MPPs Andrew Dowie and Lisa Gretzky were also on hand.

For those who could not participate and still want to contribute, the Mission's donation page is active through March 31.
