Almost 80 per cent of stolen vehicles in Windsor and Amherstburg are recovered by the Windsor Police Service.
Last year, police launched the Auto Theft unit with a $900,000 grant from the Ontario government.
Police say the unit has made significant progress.
Vehicle thefts are down 17 per cent compared to 2024 and 27 per cent compared to 2021. Police report 24 per cent of investigations have led to criminal charges.
“These numbers represent real progress,” said Deputy Chief Jason Crowley. “They reflect the impact of a dedicated team that can target repeat offenders, identify problem areas, and deliver meaningful results for our community.”
The team also works in the community to help residents protect their vehicles.
“Auto theft often remains a crime of opportunity,” said Staff Sergeant Charles Campbell, who oversees the unit. “So far this year, two-thirds of stolen vehicles were unlocked, and one in eight had keys left inside. Awareness is the first line of defence, and our officers are committed to helping residents take those extra steps to secure their vehicles.”
