Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have put out a warning to residents after a Windsor-Essex resident was taken for thousands of dollars.
Officers arrived at a Lakeshore home on Friday morning for a call about fraud.
The complainant told police that they had received several calls from someone claiming to be a lawyer, informing them that a grandson had been involved in a head-on crash, was arrested, and needed $6,500 in bail money.
Later in the day, a man appeared at the woman's house to collect the cash.
The victim then contacted her daughter, who determined that the situation was a scam and called police.
The OPP say they are investigating 11 additional complaints about a "grandparent scam" in Essex County.
Police have urged residents to stop and verify before sending any money by contacting the relative in question to confirm the details.
People are also being asked to be wary of any payment requests in gift cards, cryptocurrency, e-transfers, or cash couriers. Residents are also asked not to give any personal or financial information out to random callers.
