Canada's first large-scale lithium-ion battery plant is expanding its operations to include the production of energy storage system batteries, even before it begins mass production of batteries for future electric vehicles.
Starting this month, NextStar Energy in Windsor will begin manufacturing the batteries for commercial and grid-scale energy storage solutions. The market for those is expanding and is forecast to continue growing over the next decade, driven in part by AI data centres and the need for grid stability.
"NextStar Energy's expansion into energy storage reflects the company's ability to respond and adapt to changing markets," said NextStar Energy's CEO Danies Lee. "By adding to our portfolio, we are not only demonstrating our resilience and flexibility as a company, but also our commitment to sustainable innovation and a lasting footprint here in Windsor."
The battery plant has added a new chemistry to its production: Lithium Iron Phosphate, also known as LFP batteries. The company said it will accompany the Nickel Manganese and Cobalt chemistry at the plant.

Our team's skillset and competence enable us to not only meet but exceed milestones leading up to the start of production."
So far, more than 1,000 workers have been hired at the Banwell Road plant.
Mass production at the plant is anticipated to start in the coming weeks.
