Three charged in Windsor identity theft and fraud case

Windsor police say three people are facing charges following an investigation of fraud using someone's stolen personal information.

The Financial Crimes Unit added that one of the suspects was an employee at a telecommunications company.

The company filed a complaint with Windsor police on May 21, about a fraudulent account opened using two stolen identities. The account was then used to fraudulently purchase electronic devices valued at $9,529.

Police learned that the company employee created the phony account in January. The following week, two others met at a retail outlet, where they were given two new cell phones and a tablet.

Two men and a woman were eventually identified.

A 35-year-old woman and a 32-year-old man turned themselves in at Windsor police headquarters this week.

Both are charged with fraud over $5,000, personation, obtaining funds through false pretence over $5,000, and possession of stolen property over $5,000.

The employee, a 34-year-old man, was issued a criminal citation with an order to appear at a future court date. He is charged with one count of fraud over $5,000.

The charges have not been proven in court.
