The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit (WECHU) has reported the first human case of West-Nile Virus in 2025.
The health unit just reported the first positive mosquito pool earlier this week.
A person can be infected with the West-Nile Virus after being bitten by an infected mosquito.
Most people will never develop symptoms; however, they can start to develop within 2-14 days of being bitten.
Symptoms include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, body aches, skin rash, and swollen lymph glands.
Anyone concerned about any symptoms should contact their health care provider.
"It is important for everyone to eliminate any standing water around their property and take personal protective measures to avoid mosquito bites even as we approach the cooler fall months," said Dr. Mehdi Aloosh, WECHU Medical Officer of Health.
To protect against contracting the virus, the health unit recommends using insect repellent, wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants when outdoors, and limiting time outdoors at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.
